The 6 metres high, and 10 metres long statue of a slain lion, which is carved from stone, and located in Switzerland. The statue is designed to pay tribute to hundreds of Swiss guards who died in 1792 when the rebels who were in favour of revolution, attacked Tuileries Palace in Paris. It is known as the “Lion Monument”. It is also referred as Dying Lion or the Lion of Lucerne. On top of the lion it is written that, ”Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti” meaning “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss”. Directly below the sculpture, the names of the dead Swiss soldiers are written.  Mark Twain praised the sculpture in 1880 saying it is “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”
